A repeatable method

Read the question first only to identify the task, then read the passage for its argument. Mark the main claim, supporting reasons and qualifications. Choose what the text supports, not what sounds attractive from outside knowledge.

A main idea summarises the passage's central argument. An inference follows from the text without adding an unsupported premise. An assumption is an unstated condition needed for a particular argument. An example illustrates a claim; it is not automatically the central claim.

Original passage

A town replaced its paper application system with an online portal. Average processing time fell, but several residents could not complete applications because instructions were available in only one language. The town then added assisted counters and translated guidance. The experience suggests that a service should be evaluated through both efficiency and practical accessibility.

Worked questions

1. Main idea: A) Every online service fails. B) Service quality involves efficiency and accessibility. C) Paper is always better. D) Translation eliminates every barrier. Answer B. It captures the conclusion without exaggeration.
2. Supported inference: A) Faster average processing does not prove equal access. B) Every resident lacks internet. C) Assisted counters increase fraud. D) The portal was abandoned. Answer A. The passage gives evidence of an access barrier despite faster processing.
3. Which is NOT established? A) Processing time fell. B) Some residents faced language barriers. C) Guidance was translated. D) All residents could then complete applications. Answer D. The intervention's universal success is not stated.

Eliminate carefully

Reject options that reverse the author's claim, introduce facts outside the passage, turn “some” into “all”, or confuse a possible outcome with a necessary one. Absolute words are warning signs, not an automatic elimination rule: an absolute statement can be correct when explicitly supported.

A second exercise

“Libraries provide books, but their value also lies in quiet study space and support from staff. Counting only borrowed books can therefore understate their contribution.” What follows? A library's contribution need not be fully captured by borrowing totals. It does not follow that borrowing statistics are useless or that every library is effective.

Error log

After each passage, label the error: missed qualification, outside knowledge, reversed relation, overly broad conclusion or vocabulary. Re-read the exact sentence that resolves the question. Practise explaining why each distractor is wrong; answer-only practice hides weak reasoning.

Timed drill

Use 8 minutes for two short passages and six questions. Then spend at least as long reviewing. This is an original training drill, not the official exam pattern. Accuracy should stabilise before you increase speed.
