Introduction to the Indian Constitution

1 practice test
Practice: Introduction to the Indian Constitution practice

Introduction to the Indian Constitution

Polity is the study of how a country is governed. The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the country. It lays down the structure of government, the powers of its organs, and the rights and duties of citizens.

Key facts to remember

  • The Constituent Assembly framed the Constitution; Dr. Rajendra Prasad was its President.
  • Dr. B. R. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee.
  • The Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 (Constitution Day) and came into force on 26 January 1950 (Republic Day).
  • The Preamble declares India a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic.
  • Fundamental Rights are in Part III (Articles 12–35); Fundamental Duties are in Part IV-A (Article 51A).

Worked example

Question: On which date did the Constitution of India come into force?

(a) 15 August 1947 (b) 26 November 1949 (c) 26 January 1950 (d) 26 January 1952

Solution:

  1. 15 August 1947 is Independence Day — not related to the Constitution coming into force.
  2. 26 November 1949 is when the Constitution was adopted, not enforced.
  3. It came into force on 26 January 1950, which is why we celebrate Republic Day on that date.

Answer: (c) 26 January 1950.

Analogy

Analogy: The rulebook of a housing society

Think of India as a huge housing society and the Constitution as its rulebook:

  • The Preamble is the society's mission statement on the notice board — justice, liberty, equality and fraternity for all residents.
  • Fundamental Rights are the guarantees every resident gets (use of the park, water, safety) — if someone takes them away, you can complain to the "court" (Article 32).
  • Directive Principles are the committee's goals (a clean, fair, prosperous society) — important, but you cannot sue if they are not yet met.
  • Fundamental Duties are what residents owe the society — respect the rules, protect common property.
  • The Amendment process (Article 368) is how the society updates its rulebook when times change.
