Structure of a UPSC Essay
1 practice test
The Essay paper at a glance
UPSC CSE Mains Paper I (Essay) carries 250 marks. Candidates write two essays (one from each section of four topics), about 1,000–1,200 words each, in 3 hours.
A proven structure
- Introduction (≈10%) — hook the reader with an anecdote, quote, data point or paradox; then state how you understand the topic.
- Body (≈75%) — organise ideas into dimensions: social, political, economic, historical, ethical, environmental, technological, international. Each paragraph = one idea + explanation + example.
- Counter-view (≈5–10%) — acknowledge the other side; this shows balance.
- Way forward and conclusion (≈10%) — solutions, a vision for the future, and a line that links back to the introduction.
What examiners reward
- Clarity of thought and a single central argument running through the essay.
- Coherence: each paragraph flows to the next with linking sentences.
- Multi-dimensional analysis with Indian and global examples.
- Simple, correct language — not jargon.
Common mistakes
- Writing a GS answer with bullet points instead of flowing prose.
- Drifting away from the exact topic words.
- An abrupt ending without a conclusion.
Analogy
An essay is like a well-planned train journey. The introduction is the station where passengers learn the destination; each body paragraph is a coach linked firmly to the next; the counter-view is a planned halt to look at the scenery from the other window; and the conclusion is arriving exactly at the destination announced at the start — not at some random stop.
