Swar Sandhi: How Vowels Join

Lesson 1 of 118 minFree

The question in plain words: When two Hindi words come together, the last vowel of the first word and the first vowel of the second word join and change. For example, विद्या + आलय = विद्यालय. By which rule does this change happen, and how do we tell which type of vowel joining (स्वर संधि) is in a word?

After this lesson you can:

  • explain संधि (sound joining) and संधि-विच्छेद (splitting a joined word)
  • recognise the five types of स्वर संधि: दीर्घ, गुण, वृद्धि, यण, अयादि
  • split a word and name its संधि
  • tell गुण संधि and वृद्धि संधि apart

1. A story: on the school board

Meena studies in Class 4 in a village near Ajmer. Every day she reads the board on her school: "राजकीय विद्यालय" (Government School).

One day she asks her teacher, "विद्यालय is the आलय (home) of विद्या (learning). So why don't we see two 'आ' in it? Why don't we write 'विद्याआलय'?"

The teacher smiles. "When two vowels come next to each other, they join into one. 'आ' and 'आ' joined into one 'आ'. This joining is called संधि."

That evening, watching the sun rise, Meena remembers another word: सूर्योदय (sunrise). Here 'अ' and 'उ' joined and became 'ओ'! Let us see the rules behind these joinings.

2. Step 1: what is संधि?

  • संधि (sandhi) is the change that happens when two sounds (letters) come next to each other.
  • Writing a joined word back as its two parts is संधि-विच्छेद (splitting). Example: विद्यालय = विद्या + आलय.
  • संधि has three kinds: स्वर संधि (vowel joining), व्यंजन संधि (consonant joining) and विसर्ग संधि (visarga joining).
  • This lesson covers only स्वर संधि: vowel + vowel.
  • स्वर संधि has five types: दीर्घ, गुण, वृद्धि, यण and अयादि.

3. Step 2: दीर्घ संधि (same vowels → long vowel)

  • When the same vowels meet (short or long), they become the long (दीर्घ) vowel.
  • अ/आ + अ/आ = आ: विद्या + आलय = विद्यालय, हिम + आलय = हिमालय
  • इ/ई + इ/ई = ई: रवि + इंद्र = रवींद्र, गिरि + ईश = गिरीश
  • उ/ऊ + उ/ऊ = ऊ: भानु + उदय = भानूदय, सु + उक्ति = सूक्ति

4. Step 3: गुण संधि (अ/आ followed by इ, उ, ऋ)

  • अ/आ + इ/ई = ए: देव + इंद्र = देवेंद्र, नर + ईश = नरेश, महा + ईश = महेश
  • अ/आ + उ/ऊ = ओ: सूर्य + उदय = सूर्योदय, महा + उत्सव = महोत्सव
  • अ/आ + ऋ = अर्: देव + ऋषि = देवर्षि, महा + ऋषि = महर्षि

5. Step 4: वृद्धि संधि (अ/आ followed by ए, ऐ, ओ, औ)

  • अ/आ + ए/ऐ = ऐ: एक + एक = एकैक, सदा + एव = सदैव, मत + ऐक्य = मतैक्य
  • अ/आ + ओ/औ = औ: वन + औषधि = वनौषधि, महा + औषध = महौषध
  • Remember: गुण gives ए, ओ; वृद्धि ("growth") gives the grown-up forms ऐ, औ.

6. Step 5: यण संधि (इ, उ, ऋ followed by a different vowel)

  • इ/ई + a different vowel: इ/ई changes to य्. इति + आदि = इत्यादि, यदि + अपि = यद्यपि, प्रति + एक = प्रत्येक
  • उ/ऊ + a different vowel: उ/ऊ changes to व्. सु + आगत = स्वागत, अनु + अय = अन्वय
  • ऋ + a different vowel: ऋ changes to र्. पितृ + आज्ञा = पित्राज्ञा
  • Sign: the word shows a half य् (्य), a half व् (्व) or a half र् (्र).

7. Step 6: अयादि संधि (ए, ऐ, ओ, औ followed by a vowel)

  • ए → अय्: ने + अन = नयन
  • ऐ → आय्: गै + अक = गायक, नै + अक = नायक
  • ओ → अव्: पो + अन = पवन, भो + अन = भवन
  • औ → आव्: पौ + अक = पावक
  • Sign: you hear अय, आय, अव, आव in the word.

8. The picture to remember

How vowels join: in विद्या + आलय, आ + आ become आ, giving विद्यालय (दीर्घ); in सूर्य + उदय, अ + उ become ओ, giving सूर्योदय (गुण); in सदा + एव, आ + ए become ऐ, giving सदैव (वृद्धि)
Table of the five types of स्वर संधि. दीर्घ: same vowels give आ, ई, ऊ; विद्यालय. गुण: अ/आ + इ, उ, ऋ give ए, ओ, अर्; सूर्योदय. वृद्धि: अ/आ + ए, ओ give ऐ, औ; सदैव. यण: इ, उ, ऋ change to य्, व्, र्; इत्यादि. अयादि: ए, ऐ, ओ, औ change to अय्, आय्, अव्, आव्; नयन

9. Shortcuts (after you understand)

Shortcuts

The order: दी-गु-वृ-य-अ (दीर्घ, गुण, वृद्धि, यण, अयादि). आ, ई or ऊ in the word, with the same vowel on both sides → दीर्घ. ए, ओ or अर् (अ/आ followed by इ, उ, ऋ) → गुण. ऐ or औ in the word → वृद्धि. Half य्, व् or र् (इत्यादि, स्वागत, पित्राज्ञा) → यण. अय, आय, अव, आव (नयन, गायक, पवन, पावक) → अयादि.

10. How to teach this in class

How to teach this in class

Start with words children know: विद्यालय, सूर्योदय, महोत्सव, स्वागत. Children hear and read these every day. Join and split with word cards: write "विद्या" on one card and "आलय" on another. Children put them side by side and join them aloud. Examples first, rule later: children look at three or four examples and find the pattern themselves. Write the rule on the board afterwards. This is the inductive method (आगमन विधि). Say it aloud: saying "अ + उ = ओ" aloud helps children hear the change in sound. Make it a game: "Sandhi pairs": half the class holds first parts, the other half second parts; find the right partner.

Which is the most suitable way to teach संधि in Class 5?

A Make children learn the rules of all five types first, then give examples
B Give examples of familiar words, let children find the pattern themselves, then state the rule
C Only read out the definition from the textbook
D Do not teach grammar, because children pick up language on their own
Show answer

Correct answer: B

This is the inductive method (आगमन विधि): from examples to the rule. In the lower classes, grammar becomes meaningful this way.

Option A: Rules learnt by heart without examples are not understood and are soon forgotten.

Option C: Only reading out a definition does not make children active.

Option D: Grammar helps children use language correctly; it should not be dropped, only taught in context.

Hint: From examples to the rule.

11. Quick check

Which संधि is in "सूर्योदय"?

A दीर्घ संधि
B गुण संधि
C वृद्धि संधि
D यण संधि
Show answer

Correct answer: B

सूर्य + उदय: अ + उ = ओ. When उ comes after अ/आ, it becomes ओ. This is गुण संधि.

Option A: In दीर्घ संधि the same vowels meet; here अ and उ are different.

Option C: वृद्धि संधि gives ऐ or औ, not ओ.

Option D: यण संधि gives a half य्, व् or र्; there is none here.

Hint: अ + उ = ओ.

Which is the correct split (संधि-विच्छेद) of "इत्यादि"?

A इत् + आदि
B इति + आदि
C इत + यादि
D इत्या + दि
Show answer

Correct answer: B

इति + आदि: a different vowel आ comes after इ, so इ changes to य्: इत्यादि. This is यण संधि.

Option A: इत् + आदि would give "इतादि", not इत्यादि.

Option C: "इत" and "यादि" are not meaningful parts.

Option D: "इत्या" and "दि" are not meaningful parts.

Hint: A half य् points to यण संधि.

What do "सदा + एव" make?

A सदेव
B सदैव
C सदाएव
D सदोव
Show answer

Correct answer: B

आ + ए = ऐ. When ए comes after अ/आ, it becomes ऐ. This is वृद्धि संधि: सदैव.

Option A: सदेव has ए; ए is made by गुण संधि, which applies to अ/आ + इ/ई.

Option C: In संधि the two vowels join and change; they are not written separately.

Option D: ओ comes from अ/आ + उ/ऊ.

Hint: आ + ए = ऐ.

Which संधि is in the word "पवन"?

A गुण संधि
B वृद्धि संधि
C यण संधि
D अयादि संधि
Show answer

Correct answer: D

पो + अन: अ comes after ओ, so ओ changes to अव्: पवन. This is अयादि संधि.

Option A: In गुण संधि, इ, उ or ऋ comes after अ/आ.

Option B: वृद्धि संधि gives ऐ or औ.

Option C: In यण संधि it is इ, उ or ऋ that changes, not ओ.

Hint: ओ → अव्.

Common mistake

"गुण and वृद्धि are the same." No. गुण gives ए, ओ (देवेंद्र, सूर्योदय); वृद्धि gives ऐ, औ (सदैव, वनौषधि). "Every joining of two words is संधि." No. In संधि the sounds (letters) change. Joining words by their meaning is समास (compound). "नयन = न + यन." No. The correct split is ने + अन (ए changes to अय्, अयादि संधि).
