Sample questions with solutions

A few questions like the ones in this test, with the right answer and why.

  1. Question 1
A farmer harvested 720 kg of wheat and kept 45% of it for his family. How many kg of wheat did he keep for his family?
    • 396 kg
    • 324 kgRight answer
    • 32.4 kg
    • 16 kg
    Explanation

    Multiply by the percentage and divide by 100: 720 × 45 ÷ 100 = 324.
    Shortcut: 45% = 50% − 5%. 50% of 720 = 360, and 5% is a tenth of that, 36. So 45% = 360 − 36 = 324.
So he kept 324 kg of wheat for his family.

  2. Question 2
In a village, 7 out of every 12 people are farmers. What percent of the people of the village are farmers?
    • 84%
    • 41⅔%
    • 56%
    • 58⅓%Right answer
    Explanation

    7 out of 12 is the fraction 7/12. Multiply by 100: 7/12 × 100 = 700 ÷ 12, which is 58⅓. So 58⅓% of the people are farmers.
    Shortcut: 7/12 = 6/12 + 1/12 = 1/2 + 1/12. Here 1/2 is 50%, and 1/12 is 8⅓%, half of 1/6 (16⅔%). So 7/12 is 50% plus 8⅓%, that is 58⅓%.
    Check: in a village of 1,200 people, 7/12 of 1,200 is 700 farmers, and 700 ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 58.33, that is 58⅓%.

  3. Question 3
2.5 quintals of wheat were stored in a godown, and 15 kg of it got spoiled. What percent of the stored wheat got spoiled?
    • 6%Right answer
    • 0.6%
    • 600%
    • 94%
    Explanation

    1 quintal = 100 kg, so 2.5 quintals = 2.5 × 100 = 250 kg.
    Spoiled share = 15 ÷ 250 × 100 = 6, so 6% of the wheat got spoiled.
    Shortcut: 1% of 250 kg is 2.5 kg, and 15 ÷ 2.5 = 6, so 15 kg is 6%.

  4. Question 4
The population of a village is 12,400. It grows by 5% in one year. What will the population of the village be after one year?
    • 620
    • 12,462
    • 13,020Right answer
    • 11,780
    Explanation

    5% of 12,400 = 620 (10% is 1,240, and 5% is half of that).
    Population after one year = 12,400 + 620 = 13,020.
    Shortcut (multiplier): growing by 5% means multiplying by 1.05, and 12,400 × 1.05 = 13,020.

  5. Question 5
The price of onions rose from ₹35 per kg to ₹70 per kg. By what percent did the price rise?
    • 200%
    • 100%Right answer
    • 50%
    • 35%
    Explanation

    Rise = 70 − 35 = ₹35.
    Percent rise = 35 ÷ 35 × 100 = 100, so the price rose by 100%.
Shortcut: the price doubled. Doubling means the rise equals the old price, which is a 100% rise; the new price is 200% of the old one.
    Check: 100% of 35 = 35, and 35 + 35 = 70.
