PowerPoint: slides, layouts and content

Lesson 7 of 86 minFree

A presentation is built from slides

PowerPoint helps you arrange words, pictures and other content into a presentation. A slide is one page in that presentation. A text box or picture is an object on a slide; adding one does not create another slide.

TermJob
PresentationThe collection of slides
SlideOne page of the presentation
LayoutArrangement and formatting of a slide's placeholders
PlaceholderA predefined container for content in a layout

A layout can provide a title placeholder and a content placeholder. These containers help position content; they do not write or fact-check your message. A text box that you insert yourself is not automatically one of the layout's placeholders.

Plan content before decorating it

Suppose you are making a short study-plan presentation. This is an original planning example, not a compulsory number of slides.

SlidePurpose
1: Study planIntroduce the topic
2: This weekExplain the tasks
3: Check progressAsk a review question

For slide 2, a Title and Content layout can give you a title area and a body area. Put the heading in the title placeholder and the short task list in the content placeholder. If the wording is wrong, edit the text. Changing the layout is a different operation; it does not correct a wrong fact or spelling for you.

  1. Give slide 2 one clear purpose: explain this week's tasks.
  2. Choose a suitable layout, such as Title and Content, for a heading and a task list.
  3. Enter the heading and tasks in their placeholders. Edit any wrong wording in the text itself.
  4. Check the result: readable text, a useful heading and no content cut off. Simplify or divide crowded content when needed.

The last check is a design suggestion, not a fixed word-count rule. Command names and available layouts can vary by version and theme. This lesson teaches the jobs of the parts rather than one universal menu sequence.

Five practice checks

  1. Which term means one page inside a PowerPoint presentation?
A The whole presentation
B A storage folder
C A slide
D A transition
Show answer

Correct answer: C

A slide is one page of the presentation. The whole presentation contains the slides; objects such as text boxes sit on an individual slide.

Option A: The whole presentation is the collection, not one page within it.

Option B: A folder organises stored files; it is not a page in a presentation.

Option D: A transition is an effect between slides, not a slide itself.

Hint: Separate one page from the collection that contains it.

  1. What is the main job of a slide layout in this lesson?
A Provide the arrangement and formatting of placeholders for slide content
B Write and verify every fact in the presentation
C Turn every word into an animation automatically
D Delete the other slides from the presentation
Show answer

Correct answer: A

A layout provides the structure and formatting of content placeholders. You still supply and check the actual message.

Option B: A layout does not replace writing or fact-checking the content.

Option C: Layout and animation are different concepts; choosing a layout does not automatically animate every word.

Option D: Choosing a layout is not a command to delete the other slides.

Hint: Think about where the title and body content go.

  1. A slide says "Study on Thrusday", but you meant "Thursday". Which action directly corrects this wording?
A Change the transition between slides
B Reorder the slides
C Change only the background colour
D Edit the incorrect word in the slide text
Show answer

Correct answer: D

The error is in the text itself. Editing that word corrects the wording; the other actions change effects, sequence or appearance without fixing the misspelling.

Option A: A transition controls an effect between slides, not the spelling of this word.

Option B: Reordering changes the slide sequence while leaving the wrong word in its slide.

Option C: A background colour does not change the typed word.

Hint: Match the operation to the location of the error.

  1. You insert a text box for a caption beside a picture. Which statement is correct?
A The text box is automatically a new slide.
B It is a text object on the slide, not automatically a layout placeholder.
C It automatically replaces the whole presentation.
D It cannot contain editable text.
Show answer

Correct answer: B

An inserted text box holds text on the current slide. A layout placeholder is a predefined container in the layout; an ordinary inserted text box does not automatically become one.

Option A: A text box is an object within a slide, not another page.

Option C: Adding a caption object does not replace the collection of slides.

Option D: You can enter and edit text in an ordinary inserted text box.

Hint: An object placed on a page and a predefined layout container are not the same thing.

  1. You need another page for a review question. Which action creates that additional page?
A Add a text box to the current slide
B Change the font of the current title
C Add a new slide
D Change the current slide's background
Show answer

Correct answer: C

Adding a new slide creates another page in the presentation. A text box, font change or background change affects content or appearance on the existing slide.

Option A: Another text box stays on the current slide; it does not add a page.

Option B: Changing a title's font formats existing text rather than adding a slide.

Option D: A background change changes appearance, not the number of slides.

Hint: You need another slide, not another object on the same slide.

Keep structure and content separate

Presentation contains slides. A layout structures placeholders. You supply and check the content. Start with the message, then use the layout to make it clear.
