Lesson 5 of 123 minPDF notesFree

Learning outcome

You can use the when the listener can tell which one you mean, including the standard names that take the.

Concepts and reasons

the points to a particular thing. If only one exists, or the sentence already tells us which one, use the. Unique things take the: the sun, the moon. A superlative points to one particular member of a group: the highest peak, the best answer.

Some names take the because they name a group, a union, or a feature of the earth that the exam treats as particular. Use the with rivers, seas, oceans, and mountain ranges: the Ganga, the Arabian Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Himalayas. Do not use the with a single peak or with most countries: Mount Everest, India, Asia. Use the when the country name itself says it is a union or a group: the United States, the United Kingdom. The same pattern gives the Netherlands.
