5. Next-day check: five fresh Time and Work questions

Lesson 5 of 58 minFree
Try from memory in a later sitting

Ideally, do this the next day before rereading. There is no countdown.

In these questions, rates stay constant, the job is the same, and workers’ contributions add without interfering. A “day” means the same working time for everyone.

Write all five answers on paper before checking any answer. Record total work, daily rates, and “sure” or “guess”. This protects first attempts from clues in earlier feedback. These are original practice questions, not previous-year SSC questions.

  1. A completes a job in 9 days. What fraction is completed in 4 days?
A 5/9
B 4/9
C 1/36
D 4 jobs
Show answer

Correct answer: B

Daily work = 1/9. Four days complete 4/9.

Option A: 5/9 is work left.

Option C: Multiply daily work by four.

Option D: Four days is not four jobs.

  1. A takes 12 days alone; B takes 18. How long together?
A 30 days
B 15 days
C 5 days
D 36/5 days (7.2 days)
Show answer

Correct answer: D

Use 36 units. Rates 3 and 2; time = 36 ÷ 5 = 7.2 days.

Option A: Do not add times.

Option B: Do not average times.

Option C: 5 is their combined daily work in these units.

  1. A takes 9 days alone; B takes 18. They work together for 2 days, then B leaves. How many MORE days does A need?
A 6 days
B 8 days
C 4 days
D 12 days
Show answer

Correct answer: A

Total 18; rates 2 and 1. Done = 6, left = 12. A needs 12 ÷ 2 = 6 more days.

Option B: 8 is total time, not more days.

Option C: 4 uses both rates even after B leaves.

Option D: 12 is work-units left, not days.

  1. Efficiency ratio A : B is 5 : 3. B takes 20 days for a job. How long does A take?
A 100/3 days
B 20 days
C 12 days
D 8 days
Show answer

Correct answer: C

Rates 5 and 3. Total = 20 × 3 = 60. A takes 60 ÷ 5 = 12 days.

Option A: The faster worker takes less time for the same job.

Option B: Different rates give different times.

Option D: 8 is the difference between the times.

  1. A takes 6 days alone; B takes 18. They work together for 3 days, then B leaves. What is the TOTAL time?
A 2 days
B 5 days
C 4.5 days
D 6 days
Show answer

Correct answer: B

Total 18; rates 3 and 1. Done in 3 days = 12, left = 6. A needs 6 ÷ 3 = 2 more days. Total = 3 + 2 = 5.

Option A: 2 is extra time; add the first 3 days.

Option C: 4.5 assumes both stay to the end.

Option D: 6 ignores the work B contributed.

Count only first attempts. Correcting an answer shows learning, but is not a first-attempt success.

Daily work; work done (Q1)Lesson 1
Combined rate (Q2)Lesson 2
Work left; extra or total time (Q3, Q5)Lesson 3
Efficiency and time (Q4)Lesson 4

4–5 correct with reasons: try fresh mixed questions in your main course. 0–3 or several guesses: revisit the relevant example, then solve it on blank paper. This is a study suggestion, not a pass mark or proof of mastery of the entire topic.

Four-line memory card

  1. Daily work = total work ÷ time.
  2. Together: add daily work.
  3. Work left = total − completed; use the rate of whoever remains.
  4. More daily work means less time for the same job.

On paper record: date / first score out of 5 / guesses / mistake to fix. This lesson does not automatically record confidence or send reminders. Later this week, solve a new example for a skill you missed.
